Your Partner and Coach

The birthing womans partner is usually at the top of the labor support list and often acts as a coach to encourage the mother to try different comfort measures helping and guide the mother through different relaxation and coping techniques. The presence of the father, or partner, during labor and delivery is a fairly new concept in the US, becoming more prevalent within the last twenty-five years. Now, the participation of a womans mate in the birthing process is the norm. Often times, the father is the one that cuts the umbilical chord and, more recently, the one who catches the baby upon delivery.

Having the partner present during labor and delivery also tends to create a more intimate family-centered atmosphere, making the experience more rewarding for both parents. A woman can also draw from their partner's love and strength, thus making the emotional and physical process of childbirth and the transition to motherhood much easier and more fulfilling.

I am careful to understand the comfort levels, and what involvement is desired from each person in the support team. I then work to encourage, and respect that during labor.
I offer you my support for the birth of your child, to help you create the most comfortable, and positive environment possible. I serve as a guide to your support team in being helpful, whomever you choose that to be.

Childbirth is not an easy thing to approach for anyone. It is complex as is the needs of women and their families. Women in labor need the love and companionship provided by their partners. A doula is not someone who will replace the dad in anyway. Instead, I will work work with your partner. Labor can be very scary for a man. During the start of labor a man may be feeling very mixed emotions. Joy and happiness for the soon arrival of a child and fear and confussion. He may witness his partner in pain and understandably become distressed. A doula can help reassure the family and help the mother cope with labor pain. Sometimes a dad may not fully understand a mother's instinctive behavior during childbirth. As a doula, I will help both to understand the normal birth process. I will help both mother and partner to understand and cope with the different feelings and emotions. I want this moment in your lives to be remembered forever and always remembered as a positive experience. I will help you have the best of both worlds by providing a doula's expertise and guidance through childbirth, while your partner still provides loving care, attention and priceless loving support that only he could provide.
